Facts & History about Animal Testing

Many people have concerns about companies testing products on animals, and we share those concerns here at P&G. Animal testing for us is a last resort when all other reasonable options have been exhausted. While we are committed to improving lives with high quality products, we are also committed to safeguarding the health of our consumers.

The P&G animal testing policy covers three areas: healthcare research, pet nutrition research, and consumer goods research. For healthcare research, P&G animal testing is required prior to testing on humans by regulatory standards. Even so, we use the minimum number of animals necessary for these tests.

For pet nutrition research, the P&G animal testing policy involves feeding our Eukanuba or Iams pet food to dogs and cats to help us develop nutrition that delivers true health benefits to millions of pets around the world. We make sure that our dogs and cats are cared for to the standard that we, as pet owners, would care for our own pets. P&G only uses animals in nutrition studies equivalent to those done with human volunteers. After testing is complete, P&G's animal testing policy requires that pets be adopted into loving homes or placed into our retirement facility.

We test no consumer products on animals unless forced to do so by law here at P&G. Animal testing is required by the government, which maintains that it is not possible to avoid all animal tests and maintain the same levels of health protection for consumer goods.

Even though it is not always possible to avoid animal testing, we are continuing progress toward the reduction, refinement, and replacement of P&G animal testing. We work with governments around the world to challenge legal requirements of P&G animal testing. We also work with partners to develop alternatives that offer the same level of health protection as animal tests, and we collaborate with governments and academia to share and promote acceptance of our discoveries.

P&G is a leader in alternatives to animal testing, having invested over $190 million to help develop more than 50 proven alternative methods. P&G animal testing policy ensures that we work with animal welfare organizations to maintain the highest standards for the care of our animals. We seek input from leading experts to continuously improve the P&G animal testing approaches and methods. We also welcome independent review of our standards and inspections of our facilities by leaders in animal care.

At P&G, animal testing is something we take very seriously. At P&G, animal cruelty is never acceptable. We place the utmost importance on protecting the health and welfare of the animals we hope to serve as pets one day. We also strive to help our consumers, both human and animal, be as healthy as possible with as few consequences as possible, so you can feel safe buying P&G products.
